Nowadays, most of us are connected to the Internet via a wireless Wi-Fi interface. Although security requirements are increasing year by year, many people still use weak passwords. However, information is now leaking into the media that in the case of up to 25 thousand Linksys routers, even a strong password was literally useless. The routers themselves were struggling with data leaks, which could have allowed hackers to determine the physical location of the device and users.

Pro Apple security and privacy come first:

This information was discovered by researcher Troy Mursch, who published his report in a cybersecurity magazine – pool Packets Report. According to him, sensitive data is leaking from the routers, but the company itself has denied these allegations. Linkys was bought out by Belkin in 2013, which became owned by Foxconn in 2018. He now claims that they are unable to reproduce this security flaw and therefore there should not actually be any leakage. Foxconn has reportedly done all the necessary testing with the marked models running the latest firmware versions. However, according to their developers, the bug is no longer present in their device and therefore they have closed the whole case.

Linksys engineers claim that it was fixed already in 2014. However, Mursch himself disagrees with this, saying that the hacker has direct access not only to the MAC address of the router, but also to the addresses of all connected devices. There are even more specific data leaks that can even show an attacker information like Wroclaw's iPhone, the operating system of the connected device and the public IP address, thanks to which the device can be located. A very simple one will do this website, which will tell you the exact location by IP address. Almost every router comes with pre-set login information from the factory, with the name and password usually set to admin. However, a hacker can find out from the leaked data whether there has been a change.

According to reports so far, there are about 21,401 routers affected by this security flaw. If you own a Linksys router, you can check this page to see if your model is on the list of products that could potentially send the aforementioned sensitive data.
