"Hey, let me have a hotspot!" I hear this exact phrase very often in class. Most of you probably know that you can share your data connection with others using a Wi-Fi hotspot. Hotspot is a feature that turns your phone into a kind of router that other users can connect to and surf the Internet at the cost of your data. But did you know that you can also create a hotspot on your MacBookor even a Mac? However, since you can't insert a SIM card into any Apple computer, the hotspot works a little differently here. So let's take a look at how the hotspot works in macOS and how to activate it.

How to enable hotspot in macOS

As I mentioned above, no Mac has the ability to connect a SIM card. So where do you get the internet that you can share with others? Simply – with a cable, specifically an Ethernet cable. This means that to share the internet using a hotspot, your Mac or MacBook connected to the internet by cable. For newer devices, you can of course use the Thunderbolt port together with an Ethernet adapter.

Pro To activate the hotspot on your macOS device, click on the top left of the screen icon Apple. Then select an option from the drop-down menu System Preferences… A new window will open in which you are interested in the column Sharing, which is located in the third line in the seventh position. After clicking, move to the bookmark in the left menu Internet sharing. Share connection via set to Ethernet and from the list next to the word Help tick the option Wi-Fi. Then click the button Wi-Fi settings, where you can set your network name, security, and password. After you are done with the settings, click the button OK. Now check the box in the left menu Internet sharing. A warning window will appear, where you just need to click the button Start. With this procedure, you have simply created a Wi-Fi hotspot on your Mac that other users can connect to. You can tell that the hotspot is active, among other things, by the fact that it appears in the top bar Wi-Fi icon with arrow.

Other users already on their other devices, for example iPhonecomputers or laptops, they can simply go to the Wi-Fi settings and connect to your created hotspot using the details you set up when setting up the hotspot.
