In addition to the introduction of new iPad Pros and Macs, we also saw the release of a new operating system last night. iOS 12.1, which brings to the new iPhones XS, XS Max and XR support for eSIM, thanks to which it will now be possible to use two numbers on these models. So let's take a closer look at this new feature and tell you how to set it up.

All iPhones introduced this year and even the iPad Pro introduced yesterday were introduced with eSIM support. However, now we will mainly focus on iPhones and the eSIM functionality in them. But first, we should clarify what exactly an eSIM actually is. eSIM can be described as a digital SIM card or, if you prefer, a chip that is implemented directly in your iPhone or iPad and is able to replace a classic physical SIM card. The only thing you have to do for its functionality is to upload a tariff from your operator to it. After that, you can use the phone exactly as you were used to even with a physical SIM card.
You can use an eSIM both if you only have one number and if you need two numbers. The operator will easily transfer the number from the physical SIM card to an eSIM at any branch. However, since it currently only supports T-Mobile in the Czech Republic, it is clear that for its functionality it is only possible to use its services.
If you have two numbers, you can also get them on your phone very easily. One number is provided by the physical SIM inserted into the slot, and the second is provided by the eSIM, which you can arrange with T-Mobile and later with other Czech operators. If you were switching from a competitor to T-Mobile because of the eSIM and would like toonechat your original number, you will proceed exactly as when numbers were transferred between operators even in the days of physical SIM cards. However, from my own experience I can tell you that fortunately it is nothing terrible and everything is taken care of maxideally through a few phone calls. If you are bound by certain tariff contracts, porting your number may of course be more complicated.
If you've ever come across Dual-SIM phones in the past, you should know that iPhones work in a very similar way. For both numbers, you can set what you want to use them for or label them as, for example, work or personal. It is not a problem to set, for example, one tariff only for calls and then have the other equipped for mobile internet. Apple However, it warns on its website that at some point it may iPhone always use only one mobile data network. For example, if you were to call from an eSIM and want to write a message from the physical SIM during the call, you would be out of luck. The same applies if you were to call from one SIM and someone tried to call you on the other at the same time. In this case, their call will be redirected to voicemail or marked as busy.
Using eSIM also makes a lot of sense for travelers who are used to using the services of foreign operators. In this case, they can use their “parent” physical SIM of the Czech operator in their phone withoutchat and deactivate it and then load the local operator's tariff onto the eSIM. This eliminates the annoying switching of SIM cards.
How to activate eSIM
Activating an eSIM is really simple, but you can't do without contacting your operator. He will provide you with either a QR code or the necessary data, which will then be used to fill in the necessary data. You enter the tariff for eSIM in Settings – Mobile data – Add mobile tariff, where you then proceed according to the instructions. However, you can easily set the eSIM tariff through the applications of the operators, who, of course, must have eSIM support in the menu and their application updated. Either way, the setup is very simple. However, as I wrote in the introduction, a new iPhone update to iOS 12.1 and have an internet connection.
After inserting the tariff via eSIM, the above-mentioned eSIM label is waiting for you, which should be used for your better orientation. You can choose a label from the pre-made ones, and of course you can also create your own. The tariff designation can be changed later through the settings.
The next step is to set what services you require from the eSIM number. So you set the default number for iMessage, FaceTime, calls, messages or data.
You will have a total of three options to choose from:
Use as the default line Primary (or otherwise marked with a label): When you select this option, the primary line will act as the default for voice, SMS, data, iMessage and FaceTime. The secondary line will be available for voice and SMS only.
Use as the default line Secondary (or otherwise marked with a label): If you select this option, the secondary line will be used for voice, SMS, data, iMessage and FaceTime. The primary line will be available for voice and text messaging only.
Use the Secondary line (or otherwise marked with a label) only for mobile data: This option can be useful when you are traveling abroad and want to have a primary line foronechat for voice services, SMS, iMessage and FaceTime. You can then use the secondary one for data.
Of course, you can still adjust the eSIM settings according to your personal preferences. For example, if you only want to call from a physical SIM but you have to handle one call via an eSIM, this option can be set for individual contacts. Of course, it is just as easy to reset the sending of SMS and MMS messages, where when writing a message you can very easily choose from which number it should be sent. If you start using two SIMs, both will start to appear in the top status bar, so you can easily check their signal. If you then need to deactivate one number, you can do so in Settings - Mobile data.

eSIM in new iPhonech really offers a lot of very useful options that will make life much easier for many of us. Hopefully we will see support from O2 and Vodafone soon.one, which eliminates the need to worry about number transfers or similar problems. Koneyes!!!
It works perfectly. Setup is simple. You just need to visit a T-Mobile store and notchat exchange your card for an eSim. The system completes the exchange within a minute. Then you just need to remove the plastic and proceed according to the article. When I called the infoline this morning and asked the lady to send me a QR code by email, she didn't know what an eSim was, after 10 minutes of waiting she told me that I could find the QR code in banking and after another 10 minutes she was talking such crap again that I just told her how pathetic and embarrassing it was that T-Mobile had such a competitive advantage, according to the press spokespeople they have been testing these technologies for years and in the end they are not even able to send an email to the entire retail, what the eSim actually is and how to activate it. So I went to the store, they gave me a classic A4 paper (there is a QR code, pin, puck) and the employee told me that all I had to do was set it up at home. That he hadn't done it before and that he didn't know how. Again, the brilliance and misery of T-Mobile. T-Mobile had approx. 2 months to hire your employeesancHe prepared retail for this and couldn't even handle this triviality. Fire the head of the entire retail, such a person has no business there.

You must be extremely poor.
Why should he be poor? The poor are busy.ancand that T-Mobile is not able to prepare a service that it has been testing for such a long time. Or rather, prepare for its launch. I was in Zličín today around 11:00 because of this and the lady was so impressed that I could have given her a hard time. Straight away, that there is nothing like that, that it is being tested and God knows what. So I explained to her that the information she has is outdated and that she should check it out again... The result is this, and here I will remind you again that it is a lack of preparation on the part of T-Mobile, that they do not have QR codes in stock. T-Mobile simply stocks individual pieces of paper. I do not understand why they have not had it in the store for a week and are ready. I also do not understand why in 2018 they are not able to have one central DB from which they will print it in the store. Especially since they have to print all sorts of crap...
So I left Zličín at 11 a.m. unharmed...
He's a poor guy, it must be terrible to buy a phone for 40 taka and then find out that no one will give a shit about you. :D
I agree, it's a POOR ... you can see it from the writing ... it literally emanated from the text that it was written by a mentally retarded person
Well, you know, they at TM are definitely expecting a "huge rush" of eSIM applicants :-(, don't be under the illusion that you're the most important thing in the world. They really don't care if they can offer you an eSIM the very next day after what Apple "with great glory" he launched.
Would it be possible to write the store where you were? Chodov doesn't have one, and I wouldn't like to run all over Prague

Yesterday I was at T Mobil in Opava. They had no idea what it was about
Processed today at Roztyle... Setup takes a few moments... Really easy...
He's not a poor man, he's an ordinary Czech usustuvany picus, we have clouds like that in the Czech Republic
It will probably be a problem if you accidentally iphoneIf something happens, I'll probably just take a sim card nestI say to the second phone just like with a classic SIM, at least not now when SIM is not available everywhere.
that's right, the "main" SIM needs to be a classic plastic one, or carry the QR code with you to set it up in another phone. :-)
The QR code is a one-time use. If you use it with your phoneoneIf something happens to me, I will still need to go to the branch, even for a new QR code or a new plastic SIM.
Good day, I have a question. I want to buy iPhone xs but I don't want to use esim here. Can I just have my plastic sim in it ☺ or do I just have to use esim here??? Thanks in advance for the answer :))
Do I understand correctly that I can't use the physical SIM only if I make calls from the eSIM? Or even if I use data on the eSIM, which is actually still the case, will I still be unavailable on the physical SIM? Probably stupid, right? Only if I'm using GSM, I won't be allowed to use the other one, right?
It should be like this: one sim dates, the other is on receipt. When a call comes to the second one, the first sim will stop dating for the duration of the call.
hmm. so that's enough for... you could easily have come up with such a solutionchat, clowns :-(
I just stopped by TM and they say it's still in the process. betatest and I'm supposed to try it in a week...so what.
Evidently "every piece is an original", I mean TM stores.
For completeness, it was official. TM store in Metropolis Zlicin
@Jay: I see, they just don't care, that's all. Moreover, if you already have their Simka, why would they tear their veins. :-)
I just don't understand the simultaneous activity of both SIMs, in my opinion it's either ill-conceived there (I don't want to believe it), or it's misinterpreted here (I don't blame it, it's completely new and there aren't many reports about it). But for me to not be able to send an e-mail via data to the other SIM during a voice call from one SIM, it doesn't seem right to me. Then it would indicate some kind of virtualization of dual-SIM traffic via AppleID, so it would appear that the new iPhones do not have two modems, i.e. one for each SIM card. And that would be a big mess.
ofiko explanation on apple.com: "if you are currently calling from one line and someone calls you on the other line, the call will automatically go to voicemail and you will NOT receive a missed call notification". Really? So it is useless for practical life. It is possible to redirect calls from the second line to the first line, but you still pay for the redirection, or as if you were calling yourself. So it seems to me that an eSIM only makes sense if you run a data plan on it, otherwise it's a failed piece of rubbish. I'm sick, I'm going ……..
At least the sms will definitely come (like when a call is missed when the phone is turned off).
@Mirek: it would be logical, practice will show. The sad thing is that the operator has to send you the SMS, but only if you have an active voice. mailbox. If you don't have one, then the call has nowhere to be redirected, and then what? Well, we will see.
Unfortunately, the SMS will not arrive either. Either voicemail if the number is active or busy tone
@David: so again only such a half-baked solution :-(
Question: in the case of eSim, we are talking about a tariff. Can eSim with credit also be uploaded? Specifically, in Thailand (if the operator supports it), I will upload an eSim and use it for 2 weeks as a data card where I can top up the credit in case I run out of credit.
So is it necessary to have a tariff or can there be a credit card as well?
eSIM doesn't matter what service you run on it, it depends on the operator, i.e. it doesn't necessarily have to be a "tariff", as we know the meaning from us
The way I see it is that my main number will be on the eSim. The rest I will "spin" as needed in a drawer. Operators that support eSim are still like saffron. Otherwise, of course, you will be able to upload as many esim profiles as you need and just turn them on and off...
Now just to start the T-mobile... we expected that it would be possible already today and unfortunately, maybe in the next few days. I do not understand why Apple couldn't make 2 physical sims which would make the job much easier.
don't be too happy, it might not even be of any use to you, because if someone calls you on the second number while you are talking on the first number, you will not know that someone called you at all, except maybe if you have a voicemail and the operator sends you an SMS that there you have a new message. iP won't do this on its own. A bit unthought of, but so be it. :-(
Or lost in translation. I only believe what I see. One lady said, especially on the forum, it's useful. So if you haven't tested it for t-mobile, then it's just a waste of time...
Unfortunately, it's not lost in translation but pure reality. Tested today
@Petr: is there official information from Applu on the official website, so it's not "lost in translation" :-(
I was in the Emirates 10 days ago and I was really looking forward to trying the eSim. Unfortunately, the only operator that has it in the emirates (Etisalat) provides an eSim only for residents.
And does anyone know if Apple Watch Series 4 will be in the Czech Republic and in variaWhat is GPS + Cellular?
Today I had quite a while with a guy on the t-mobile line. He sounded quite knowledgeable and easy to talk to. A really thumbs up. Anyway, I asked about this as well, and they have somewhere on the intranet that it says "it won't be supported yet". The word "yet" is important... There is still something a little different from the iPhone...
Well, as far as I know, the problem is that the watch takes the tariff from the eSimka from the phone. In other words, at that moment, two devices are using one and the same tariff, and T-Mobile is not yet able to do that here
The change is compared to the current behavior of the network, where each number in the network can only be once.
If you have a clone of the SIM card, the SIM that was the first will log in, and the one you turn on second will not log in to the network.
But it is different with esim in watches. It has to work on the same number at the same time and even if I leave the phone at home, I will be on the same number with my watch.
That's why you can't call us even with LTE AW from Germany with an active card of a German operator. It is not supported by the local operator "yet"!
No need in the US, we already have it 😉
According to what I read on 9to5mac that's not entirely true :-)
Unfortunately, eSIM adoption seems to be a mixed bag at the moment. While the three major US carriers: Verizon, T-Mobile, and AT&T announced support for the feature, all three have seemingly pulled out, noting that support for eSIM is coming later this year. This means no major carrier in the US is currently supporting this feature. Outside of the US, support is limited but you can check here to see if yours carrier supports the feature.

It's a great thing. 🙂
Palladium ran out of eSIMs, I was taking the last one. So that you don't go there unnecessarily. But of course they will be stocking more.
how can you milk something that is virtual?
It is supposed to be exchanged for esim only for the tariff. If I have a top-up card, I'm lucky. It's a burglary.
Does anyone have that in an iPhone for approx. 35.000 CZK recharge card. Shame on you 🥳😏🥴
Love🍎4ever
Why shouldn't I? max 256 and I have a cactus :)
I think that this is such a paradox here - everyone curses the operators for ripping us off and on the other hand they pay expensive tariffs even though they don't use them - the operators then have no reason to change their pricing policy.
and we know if there will be any solution to support applications like WhatsApp? will there be a way to switch between numbers (as if between accounts) and keep the app for both numbers? 🤔
no it won't, the second SIM will always be just for voice and SMS, no data or anything else, just an eSIM implementation Apple” is the biggest waste that can be found on the market.
Before you rub yourself on the Apple, find out what it's like. You can choose which SIM the data goes through.
Hello,
so I bought an Xr (absolutely satisfied by the way) and I would also like to add a work number to my personal phone. Does anyone have a tip as to which SIM card to have as a physical one, whether it's a work one or a personal one? So far, I hardly use the office, although that will probably change gradually over time.
Thanks for the constructive reply
I am interested in the cost, it will be useful for me when I have several foreign sin cards and a domestic t-mobile. Not in the country, we will agree with them. Do I always have time to find out which local operator provides the service?
I'm already getting a little stronger from it. It's the second day today and it's not working. I bought it, received a cover with a normal sim card and a qr code. Unfortunately, the qr code says: mobile tariff cannot be added. This code is no longer valid.
Why me.
What was the solution?
e_SIMs are already physically available at the T-Mobile branded store in OC Metropole Zličín (verified on Friday 2 November 11), but only for selected (individual) customers. If you are a company with a "significant" customer contract, you are simply out of luck for a few months before T_Mobile deigns to upgrade your company to the new T-Mobile internal SW. Business customers generate constant and certain profit for T-Mobile, there is no need to favor them in any way, the designation "significant" consists only of the payment. It is necessary to attract new individual customers. Discrimination of some customers again. Be Applem so I really wouldn't trust such a company. Therefore, think about whether you will go to T-Mobile as a company.
I understood correctly that I will not be able to use Message on both numbers at the same time... I use it both in private and at work 😂😂😂😂
