iFixit reported that some iPhones and Apple Watch they stop working in hospitals. At first most experts thought it was an electromagnetic pulse (EMP) fault, but in this case it is something else entirely. According to iFixit, the problems are caused by helium, which is used in certain devices in hospitals.

The problems with Apple devices in hospitals have become quite a topic of discussion after news came out of Morris Hospital, located near Chicago. This hospital received a new MRI machine.anci. Shortly after the installation itself, they started to get busy.ancand devices are struggling with the fact that their iPhones and Apple Watch stopped working. Hospital technicians identified electromagnetic pulses caused by magnetic resonance imaging as a possible cause of the malfunction.ancBut what was striking was that only Apple devices were experiencing these problems, as all Android phones worked flawlessly. When technicians received about forty non-functional devices from just Applu, they slowly began to doubt the electromagnetic pulse theory. So one of the technicians took to Reddit for advice, where he boasted about a strange problem.
Here he first learned from other users that the problem could be in the liquid helium that the magnetic resonance imaging device uses.ancand has. After further investigation, it was discovered that behind the non-working phones and watches Apple will most likely be really liquid helium, since during the installation of magnetic resonanceance it leaked. Some Apple devices started working properly again, but a few of them did not recover even after several days.
Apple Watch Series 4 were among the affected devices:
Only the director of iFixit, Kyle Wiens, learned about the mysterious malfunctions, and he and his company began to search for the cause of the malfunctions on their own. At first he thought it was a problem in the gyroscope and accelerometer that helium particles could get into and destroy them. However, Kyle immediately refuted this theory, as all phones, including Android ones, have a gyroscope and accelerometer. Then came a possible error in the operating system, but Kyle refuted this possibility as well. However, after a while of studying, he found the real cause - the oscillator, which is part of the processor.
The oscillator is often made of quartz, however Apple uses a different material for its oscillators that is susceptible to helium. So Kyle Wiens decided to run some tests. He decided to put iPhone 8 Plus into a helium bag and after a few minutes the phone really stopped working. Interestingly, however, Apple he is aware of this feature and even draws attention to this fact in one of his documents:
"If you expose iPhone proenvironments with high concentrations of industrial chemicals, including near evaporating liquefied gases, such as sound, the iPhone may be damaged or its functions may be impaired. Follow the warning signs and markings.”
So if you too are in an environment where you can come into contact with helium, be careful with your apple products. This is because you could unknowingly kill them and not resurrect them. Of course, the warranty does not cover these damages.
Oscillators are silicon not quartz. That's quite a big difference 🤦♂️😂
Really? Never come across the term Quartz oscillator? Quartz is commonly used for the construction of oscillators, similar to other piezoelectric materials. I have never heard of the use of silicon.
well, but you can't believe how Google translates it for you, or what some troll wrote on Wikipedia. A quartz oscillator is simply a silicon oscillator. Quartz is a mineral - silicon dioxide, i.e. one of the forms of silicon on Earth. Silicon is a chemical element.
-> Me: oh yeah, the main part of the oscillator is the resonator and it's made from a thin cut of quartz crystal (SiO2) - so it's probably better to call it a quartz (or crystal) oscillator
I have Helium in a bottle with me at work but there is no leakage 😀 hopefully it will stay that way
How would they find out during a claim?
And what iPhone X / XS ? They're supposed to be waterproof, so helium can't get into the device, right?
WATERPROOF. A water molecule is a little bit bigger than a helium atom.
Transport… Goodbye swimming in helium :-(
I would be quite interested in what causes this - because helium as a rare gas should not react with anything
And how?? Siri Will he talk like a smurf?? 🤔😂
The smiley crying with laughter is sitting. Yes, sometimes a "translator" gets lost in the terms -silicon-quartz-silicon, but Si element is not given to resonators, ground and plated quartz is common there. I have about 600 of them in my drawer.
it ranked stupidly, it belonged to: Filip Sádovský
This damage is "obviously" not covered by the warranty. -> how else, only a sheep pimp could write that on apple web fan.
