NASes from QNAPIn recent weeks, the internal QTS user interface has been updated, which now features an improved notification center. If you have a NAS at home and you are actively using it, whether it is just you or other users accessing its data, knowing the current status and ongoing processes is definitely useful. In this article, we will take a closer look at the new notification center and see what it can do.

After updating to the latest version of QTS, you will see a new option with the system notification dialog box Notification Center. Once you click on it, a window will appear with basic information about how the new notification center works, what it is used for, what it can do, and how to set it up. In the gallery below you will find screenshotYou can create your own picture of the new environment.

After clicking through the initial window, you will be greeted by the new notification center screen. Here you will find a summary of your settings, the number of active notifications, connected devices, which notifications are sent to, and so on (see the images in the gallery). There are several ways to send and deliver notifications. Probably the easiest and most practical are push notifications (in QTS, they are called “push service”), where the set events are displayed on your phone if you have the Q app installed and paired.managerOther notification options include Instant Messaging, SMS notifications, and Email notifications.

When we leave this summary section, in the next one we have the possibility to monitor the planned notifications (in case we have some tasks or other regular processes planned) and those that have already taken place. A more interesting tab is the next one, which is used to set notification messages as such and connect the notification center with individual devices and accounts. Here it is possible to set any number of e-mail boxes (SMTP), phone numbers (SMSC), instant message transmission (via the Internet) and push notifications for applications connected to the NAS.

After setting up all possible accounts and notification delivery methods, you need to set up which actions and events you want to be informed about. Here, the QTS system offers relatively rich options for individualization, and with enough patience, you will be able to set up the notification system in such a way that you will not miss any of the activity of your NAS. It is possible to monitor the status of the system, hardware, applications, security, data and its movement and much more. You can also choose whether you want to send some messages only to e-mail or to the application, and others (for example, important ones) directly to your phone via SMS. The options of the notification center are also tied to the installed add-ons and extensions, so in the end you can have control over almost everything that happens in the NAS.
