macOS has a feature called text clippings. You've never heard of this feature before? No wonder. Even some of my colleagues in the editorial office didn't know much about its existence. But let's not beat around the bush and explain what text clippings actually are and what they are used for. Simply put, they are some text, for example from an email, Safari or a document that you want to save quickly. The text clipping is saved as plain text without any formatting. The best part is that if you have more than one of these clippings, you can simply drag and drop them together when creating a new document – just like you would stack Lego blocks. So how do you use text clippings in macOS?

How to use text snippets

Working with clippings is really simple. First, you need to find a marked the text that caught your eye and that you want impose. Then simply select the selected text using the mouse or trackpadu we grab and move him (such as the icon in Finderu) on desktop. In order not to mark the text, but to move it, you have to catch between the lines (you can tell by the way it appears classic arrow cursor and not the cursor to edit the text). The text will then appear on the desktop saves in the form of plain text without formatting with an extension .textclipping. The snippet is named with the first few words of the selected text - but of course you can rename it like any other file.

As I already wrote in the introduction, if you prepare more such clippings, you can use them later fold together into a new document or you can do them differently drag anywhere else – to Mail, Xcode, Safari etc. To insert the clipping at the desired location, simply drag it grab and move to where you need – the text from the selected clipping will be inserted automatically. Of course, you can also open the clipping and copy only part of it, but you cannot edit it directly.

As I already wrote in the introduction, this feature is not very widespread and I didn't know about it either. I hope that with the help of this guide, I managed to get the text snippets out to people at least a little, because this is a really cool feature. Thanks to it, you can save any text very easily and quickly so that you always have it at hand and can return to it in the future. Personally, I really liked the text snippets and I can safely say that I will continue to use them.
