Apple thanks to the cutout in the display itself, it also adapted the iOS and so quite often you find that the top part of the display is simply covered by a white strip that is unused. There is also a problem with YouTube, which logically offers videos in the 16:9 aspect ratio, which is what the vast majority of cameras shoot in these days, including those in mobile devices. iPhone XS Max It has an aspect ratio of 19,5:9, so you either have to accept that the video doesn't cover the entire length of the phone, or you can switch it to a mode in the YouTube app where it covers the entire length, but for a change you have black borders above and below the video.
