Turkish President Erdogan announced a boycott of American goods, especially electronics, today. This could also affect Appand its products. Speaking at the Symposium in Ankara, theonesl, that if people currently have iPhone, have the opportunity to use Samsung, for example, and added that Turkey also has its own mobile phone brands.

“We are going to produce enough goods for ourselves. We have to provide better quality goods than what is imported from the United States of America.” Erdogan continued. During his speech, he named in particular iPhone as a significant product from America. On that occasion, however, he also mentioned Vestel phones Venus as a homegrown brand that can replace iPhones.

It is not yet clear whether the Turkish president was simply urging his people to buy non-American goods or whether this will be a real ban on all imports. Erdogan says his stance is now necessary mainly because of the recent sharp decline in the value of the Turkish currency. The US president is also to blame for this decline Donald Trump, which recently imposed economic sanctions against Turkey. First of all, this is a doubling of tariffs on Turkish steel and aluminum. The reason for these steps of the US president is disputes over relations with Syria and the detention of American pastor Andrew Brunson in Ankara.

If a total boycott of American goods really happened, it would be unpleasant news for Apple. He currently has two in Turkey Apple Story, both in Istanbul. Among the operating systems it currently has iOS share of approximately 16%. Turkey is now joining the current US-China trade war, and this dispute may again affect Apple.
