Press Release: In June last year, we saw a roaming revolution. Calls and mobile internet abroad have become cheaper. Mobile operators in most countries canceled roaming charges, so Czechs enjoyed cheaper calls, SMS and data while on holiday abroad. But do we really pay the same for internet abroad as here?

In mid-June 2017, the European Commission significantly modified the roaming rules in EU member countries and at the same time immediately banned so-called permanent roaming. Those who would therefore think of getting a favorable mobile phone tariffs abroad and use them in the Czech Republic, they are out of luck. Once the operator finds that more than two months in the last four months you call "from abroad," will require an explanation from you.

If it happens abuse of roaming services, penalties await you. Your mobile provider may charge you:

  • up to 3,2 cents per 1 minute call,
  • up to 1 cent for 1 sent SMS,
  • up to 6 euros for 1 GB of mobile data.

You can only surf a limited amount of data while on vacation without paying extra

Internet abroad is not only governed by protection in the form of permanent roaming, another rule also applies to mobile data used abroad, in the form of a ceiling. The European Commission has set a limit that can be surfed abroad. But there is not just one upper limit, it depends on the price of the domestic tariff and the fee for 1 GB, so a different limit applies to everyone.

The wholesale price for 1 GB is changing, while last year in June it was 7,7 euros, this year it is set at 6 euros, in 2020 it should reach 3,5 euros and in 2022 it will be only 2,5 euros.

This wholesale divide the price by twice the price of the tariff without VAT in euros and you get a number that expresses maxThe minimum number of GB that can be surfed abroad without penalty fees.

How much data can you surf for free on vacation?

The theory may sound a bit complicated, but the practice is simple. And how else to prove it than with a real example.

The best-selling mobile tariff from Vodafoneone je Red Full for the price of CZK 777. The tariff also includes mobile Internet free, and 5GB data packageFirst, you need to calculate the price excluding VAT, then multiply by two, convert to euros and thenonec divide by the wholesale price, which in 2018 is the aforementioned 6 euros.

CZK 777 / 1,21 = CZK 642 * 2 = CZK 1 / CZK 284 = EUR 25,33 / EUR 50,70 =8,45 GB

In this case, you are allowed to surf abroad maxat least 8,45 GB of data, but as part of the Red Naplno mobile tariff you only have 5 GB of data available, there is no additional charge for you.

The cheaper the tariff you have agreed and the more data you get within the tariff, the less data you will have for free use on holiday. once the resulting number from the calculation will be lower than your data package, you need to be smarter and limit yourself in dating. Otherwise, you mobile operator will charge an additional fee.
