Scandinavia has been proving to us for years that it is one of the biggest players in the field of green energy and handling the environment. The latest project they launched concerns a stretch of expressway that can charge an electric car even without the vehicle having to stop. The concept of the eRoad Arlanda project was presented two years ago, and now theoneis starting to be implemented.

The logistics company PostNord, whose electric vehicles are the very first in the world to use this route, is heavily involved in the eRoadArlanda project. According to resources it is a 2 km section that connects the distribution center of the mentioned company on the outskirts of the capital Stockholm with Arlanda Airport. Outside 100% safety, which is guaranteed by the project leaders, the construction costs are also interesting. On average, this is a 50 times lower investment than the construction of a tram line.

The charging principle consists in direct interaction between the vehicle and the road. The movable arm located on the chassis of the electric car is inserted into the grooves, or, if you prefer, the rails, which are directly installed in the roadway during driving. The energy that the vehicle draws is available in segments set up regularly at 50 meter intervals. If the car stops, veers off course or decides to overtake, the arm at the bottom of the vehicle is automatically disengaged.

One of the safety components that the road has is the fact that no electricity flows on its surface. It has an electric charge up to 5-6 cm below the surface and is also protected against floods and salt water. The installation of a one kilometer section in the case of the eRoadArlanda project translates to €1 million. The vision for the future is admirable. The CEO of the project, Hans Säll, talks about the implementation of electrified rails up to 20 km of highway sections.
