I didn't pay much attention to the news from Blue Wizard Digital before its release. I thought it was just one of the many puzzle-slide titles that mostly have nothing to engage with. Well, after starting the game, I was pleasantly surprised. The funny clips combined with the excellently constructed gameplay interested me so much that I lost track of time and instead of writing about this game, I focused on going through the levels.
The iconic character Jason Voorhees is portrayed in the game as more of a "mommy's pet" than a bloodthirsty serial killer. Of course, the main essence of the game is the massacre of innocent characters, but the adorable animated touch makes the familiar horror cartoon fun.
A chessboard full of death
The essence of the game is to move between squares, which can be compared to a chessboard. A similar form of movement is often used in various strategy and puzzle games. When moving between the given squares, you need to be careful of fire, water and other obstacles that will prevent you from taking the next planned step or simply kill you and return you to the beginning of the level. With Jason, you can move forward or backward in the lines, and if by chance there is a situation that you cannot get out of, just click on the icon of Jason's mother (the head in the upper left corner of the screen) and she will help you. But if it happens that there is no way out from a certain location, you can simply return the level to the beginning.
Harpoon or raw fish as a weapon
A wide variety of items can be used to kill visitors to the iconic Crystal Lake. From classic weapons such as a sword, ax or a baseball bat, more comical items such as raw fish are also available. It is also worth noting that if you are of a weaker nature, the game offers a less violent version that you can set right after the opening scene of the game.
To buy new killer items, it is necessary to move through the ranks, which you advance based on the number of levels passed, or if you watch an advertisement. After each level-up in the form of a rank, you will receive an extra weapon. Weapons are categorized into bronze, silver and gold levels.
New outfits and different locations
During the story, you will be able to unlock different types of clothing, which you can then put on Jason. For each completed chapter, you will receive a unique outfit, for example in the form of a prison uniform or medieval armor. The story takes Jason from Crystal Lake to a prison to a snowy landscape, so there is no stereotyping of the setting.
When killing and hunting your victims, you will also have to pay attention to which side you approach the characters. If you do not choose to attack from the back, you risk running away from the frightened victims, in the case of the police, you risk arrest. Each story location has different obstacles and pitfalls, which often changes the way you play.
Verdict
The processing of the familiar concept of Friday the 13th and the character of Jason Voorhees takes on a completely different point of view in this game than we are used to. The story line of the brutal killer is interesting and the difference between the individual levels will always surprise you with something. There are many strategy puzzle titles on digital stores, but Friday the 13th: Killer Puzzle doesn't come close to many of them. The game is fun and instinctive, with many levels guaranteed to torture your brain.
