MacOS Recovery (mostly better known under the name Recovery Mode or Czech Recovery) was already introduced in 2010 with OS X 10.7 Lion. Using the Recovery mode of your device with the macOS operating system, you can deal with a number of problems that may arise with your apple darling. The most common reasons why you might want to use MacOS Recovery include, for example:
- cleaning Mac for sale (i.e. deleting all data incl Apple ID)
- you need to solve a problem, for example, with system startup
- you need to use disk utility to repair the disk
- you want to roll back to a previous version of macOS
- you want to go back to factory settings or you want to erase the device disk for some other reason
- you want to restore a backup from Time Machine
- and countless other cases…
In the cases mentioned above, you would most likely want to use Recovery mode. And how to get into it?

V left part of the upper bar we click on icon Apple login and select the option Restart. Immediately after you click the Restart button, hold down the keyboard Command + R until it appears on the screen Apple logo. or spinning globe (you can also turn off the Mac instead of restarting it and hold the mentioned keyboard shortcut while starting it). If a globe appears, it means your Mac is trying to start Recovery mode through Internet Access, because he failed to start Recovery mode from the disk. After loading, a window will appear with four options:
- Restore from backup Time Machine
- Reinstall macOS
- Help online
- Disk Utility
In addition to these four options, you can also choose from other options in the top bar, such as starting Terminal, Network Utilities, and others. If you decide to leave Recovery mode, just v left part of the upper bar click on the bold text macOS Utilities and choose the last option Quit macOS Utilities.
What if MacOS Recovery doesn't work?
If you can't get into Recovery mode using the Command + R keyboard shortcut, it's possible that Recovery Mode is corrupted on your drive. Fortunately, even with this problem Apple calculated and added a feature to its macOS operating system that makes MacOS Recovery start loading from the Internet, not from your device's disk. The only thing you need in this case is an internet connection. Forced start Internet MacOS Recovery with a keyboard shortcut Option + Command + R when the device starts.
