A database of nearly a billion and a half email addresses has been leaked online. The database was discovered by Chris Vickrey, who reported his findings to the privacy organization CSO Online. Vickrey stressed that the leaked database is the property of River City Media, a marketing company, and he is certain that its employees published the database.ancas well as Matt Ferris and Alvin Slocombe, who are known spammers.

Vickery came across a database on a public repository without any password protection or other restrictions. The list contains more than 1,4 billion email accounts, names, IP addresses and even physical addresses. Vickery also said that many of the email addresses had notes from River City Media, such as records of chatemails, communications, registered websites, orders and other matters related to marketing activities.

Vickery says the most interesting thing he discovered was where the River City Media Company actually managed to get a database of nearly a billion and a half emails, because frankly, not even Coca-Cola has that many customers. The emails turned out to be from various lottery companies, leaks and so on. In addition, after Vickery's analysis, he found that River City Media Company sends more than a billion unsolicited emails every day.

CSO Online and Vickery also figured out how River City Media is bypassing anti-spam protections that would otherwise have to be working legally to send such a large number of emails. According to their claim, River City Media has set up millions of email accounts to which it sends spam first, and none of these accounts will understandably mark the emails as spam. Thus, the servers accept the sending of hundreds of millions of emails, because the first few million "users" did not report these emails as SPAM. Vickery, together with the organization Spamhaus and CSO Online, is solving the situation and trying to prevent further sending of spam, but the question remains, according to his own words, how many other companies could have downloaded the database with almost a billion and a half emails during the time it was available online.
