According to the latest news, another malware is threatening Mac owners. It takes the form of a so-called RAT (Remote Access Trojan) and targets owners of the macOS operating system. The malware, named Proton, was discovered by security group Sixgill on a Russian cybercrime forum. Here, its creators tried to sell it to other dark web users.

This particular Trojan horse is dangerous for two reasons: first, simply because it can completely disable the victim's computer. And secondly, because it has an original certificate directly from the company Apple and is so far undetectable by current macOS antivirus software.

Experts from the Sixgill group explain that the malware creator must have somehow smuggled his software through the "filtering process" network Applu, most likely with the help of stolen developer credentials or through fake registration in the developer program. This means that even malware can be delivered to users with a proper signature from the company Apple, which is considerably alarmTherefore, users should pay more careful attention than ever to the programs they install on their Mac.

After a victim's computer is infected with malware, the attacker is given the ability to execute commands remotely, including uploading and downloading files, stealing passwords, and obtaining screenshots, webcam control or access to iCloudaccounts without the need for two-factor authentication. It is also possible to remotely display windows on the infected computer screen asking for sensitive details, such as payment card information.

Proton is currently sold on the dark web for around 40 Bitcoins, in a version that allows an unlimited number of installations.
