Opera stated on their blog that their cloudOpera Sync's servers were successfully attacked by hackers. The attack was quickly stopped and an investigation is underway. Opera says some of its users' data may have been compromised. Hackers may have obtained user passwords and account information, including logins.
Last month, nearly 2 million users were using Opera Sync. This corresponds to less than half a percent of the total users of all Opera services. Even though Opera Sync stores encrypted or otherwise secure passwords in its system, it has reset all passwords to its service just to be sure.
Every Opera Sync user should receive an email informing them of the attack and prompting them to change their password. The company also recommends that users change their passwords to other sites they have saved on their service. Fortunately, the attack was only aimed at Opera Sync servers. The approximately 350 million users of the Opera browser alone have nothing to worry about. The company said in a statement that their data is safe and therefore they do not need to take any action.
Opera sincerely apologizes and assures its users that the company takes data security very seriously and is aware of the inconvenience associated with this attack.
