Jacob E. Goldman, founder of the Xerox Palo Alto Research Center, died on December 21, 2011 at the age of 90. The whole world thus lost another important person who influenced the shape of today's computers. Goldman was found at his home in Westport, Connecticut. The cause of death was probably cardiac arrest.
Jacob E. Goldman was born on July 18, 1921. After receiving a doctorate in physics from the University of Pennsylvania, he began his career at Westinghouse in 1945. In 1955, he joined the Ford car company as head of the car company's research and development laboratories. From there, the road to Xerox was already open.
In 1970, Xerox PARC was founded in an industrial area near Stanford. The West Coast was chosen by Jacob to avoid interference from the company's management in research. In addition to Ethernet networks and laser printing technology, Jacob and his people brought the world the first computer with a graphical user interface and a mouse called the Xerox Alto. It was this GUI that he successfully "copied" Steve Jobs pro svůj Macintosh.
With his importance and above all his work, he contributed a lot to the creation of computers as we know them today.
Thanks Jacob!
