This morning he released iPhone Dev Team a new version of the popular jailbreak utility Redsnow, in version 0.9.9b9. One of the basic changes compared to the older version is full support iOS 5.0.1 and application patch iBooks, which did not work properly on jailbroken devices. It also allows devices with SHSH backup to downgrade with iOS 5.x on iOS 4.3.3. Supported are iPhone 3GS with old bootrom (untethered jailbreak), iPhone 3GS with new bootrom, iPhone 4, iPod touch 3G/4G and iPad 1 (tethered jailbreak).
Redsn0w 0.9.9b9 Main Improvements:
- Native support 5.0.1 (not necessary to use iOS 5.0 IPSW). Support automatically applies to all redsn0w features: "Jailbreak", "Just boot", "Stitch blobs", "Recovery fix".
- Repair andBooks v iOS 5/5.0.1. It's a targeted fix that doesn't remove the entire sandbox mechanism.
- Users using an older version of redsn0w just need to "Just boot" with redsnow 0.9.9b9 without redoing the entire jailbreak.
- A new compatible version will arrive next week ultrasn0w for iOS 5.0.1
- support iPhone 4 8GB
- It also allows users with Windows OS to create "Custom" IPSW, without baseband update
Instructions to jailbreak with Redsn0w 0.9.9b9:
First of all, I would like to point out that the iPad 2 and iPhone 4S are not supported and it is still a tethered jailbreak, which means that after every reboot of the device, you will have to use a PC.
Step 1: Download the latest version of iTunes (10.5.2) for Windows or Mac from here.
Step 2: Back up your device via iTunes.
Step 3: Update your device to iOS 5.0.1.
4 step: Download the latest version of Redsn0w pre Windows or Mac.
Step 5: Run Redsn0w. Select “Extras”, then “Select IPSW” and open the .ipsw iOS 5.0.1)
Step 6: Press "Jailbreak" and select "Install Cydia". Get yours iPhone/iPod/iPad into DFU mode, follow the steps on the screen and wait.
Step 7: When everything is done, run Redsn0w, click on "Extras" and then on "Just Boot". Follow the on-screen instructions. You will need to do this whenever you want to have full access to the applications in your iPhone.

Semi-tethered jailbreak
A semi-tethered jailbreak allows you to access the most essential parts of your device after restarting/turning on the device. It will allow you to make phone calls, send text messages, browse Safari… However, some iPhone functions will be limited.
Step 1: Open Cydia. If you are opening it for the first time, you will be presented with a choice between 3 options. The first option is that you are a "User", the second option is a "Hacker" and the third is a "Developer". Individual modes affect the number of displayed packages. When you choose Developer, you will see the most of them. When you select User, you will not see the system packages.
Step 2: Switch to the "Manage" tab and open "Sources".
Step 3: Press "Edit", then "Add". Enter: http://thebigboss.org/semitether
Step 4: Add Source
Step 5: Open the "Search" tab and type SemiTether. Press "Install" and "Confirm".

It means that on iPhone 4 s iOS 5.0.1 is it already untethered jailbreak???
Thank you…
Peter: Read the article again. The only thing that exists is semitethered.
pre iPhone 4S with firmware 5.0.1 (9A405) it does not work.. IPSW is not supported by this version of redsn0w :-(
After reading the article, he wouldn't even try it, since it clearly says that the iPad 2 doesn't iPhone 4S :-)
how do I know if I have an old or a new bootroom for a 3GS?
I have a problem and I've been sitting at the PC since 10 in the morning trying to jailbreak! I've done it about 200 times and nothing. Greenpois0n freezes for me about half way through the installation on the iPhone. Redsnow, I will do everything, I will install cydia and then instalous. even after I don't reset my phone, I play with it, then I turn it off, I turn it on, and nothing lights up, that's all, my nerves are on the edge and I'm giving up, whoever understands this, hats off and I'll acknowledge him for the rest of my life (Iphone 4 16gb 5iOS(9A405))
I assume that as long as you have *nstalous there, you have JB ready... when you turn it on, you have to iPhone launch using Just Boot in the redsnova menu since it is a tethered jailbreak...
