When traveling to the boarding school, I like to pass the time by watching various series. So far I have used mine for this purpose MacBook Pro 15". Since there is not much space in the bus, it was not very comfortable to unload it and hold it on your knees the whole way. And certainly not if the passenger in front of you folds down the seat, which happened quite often. In that case, you watched and spent the rest of the journey watching passing cars. So I decided to try to watch series in such "combat conditions" iPhone. Because, I didn't want to waste time editing videos in Macbooku, i started looking for apps in App Store which would not require it. I needed a multimedia player mainly with support for .avi files, which is currently one of the most used formats. That was the problem. With a large number of applications that met my requirements, I suddenly couldn't choose. So that you don't have to throw away money like I did before you find out which one works for you, I decided to put them to the test and see which one is the best.
First of all, I am from App Store selected the most used players:
- CineXPlayer
- Movie Player
- OPlayer
- BUZZ Player
- Avplayer
- Goodplayer
I used it for testing. iPhone 4 and the video formats in which they are most commonly found. The main points I noticed were the smoothness of the playback, the synchronization of the video with the sound, the correct display of subtitles and the user interface.
CineXPlayer
It is the only one that plays AC3, eAC3 with support for 5.1 and 7.1 channel sound. It supports XVID, 3GP, 3GPP, AVI, MOV, M4V, MP4, H.264, AVC video up to 720p HD format and SRT subtitles. For an additional fee, it can convert all movies to 3D using color glasses. I have not personally tried this extension, but according to the reactions on various forums, it is useless. However, what is a big minus is that it does not support WMV and MKV.
Test progress:
- AVI resolution 352 x 240 with data flow 810 Kbps: Smooth playback
- AVI resolution 640 x 512 with a data flow of 3 Kbps: Does not play due to high data flow
- WMW resolution 960 x 540 with a data stream of 3 Kbps: Not supported
- MOV resolution 1280 x 532 with data rate 6 Kbps: Smooth playback

Avplayer
It is characterized by the most pleasant user environment that I encountered during the test. Simple touch gestures are used to fast forward and rewind, change full screen and slow down, speed up the video. There is also a function that turns iZariadenia into an FTP server. As a result, we can insert video files without the need for iTunes, directly from any internet browser only via Wi-Fi. It supports XVID,AVI,WMV,RMVB,ASF,H264,MKV and many more. SMI, SRT, TXT, SubStationAlpha subtitles.

I would just like to point out that there was a small mistake: P under AVPlayer is "the environment I'm from" instead of "s", "from".
otherwise nice review, koneHas anyone tried to find out which one app is the best:P.. I will definitely try that avplayer in the future^^
I would still look at AcePlayer. We got it recently when it was on sale for free. I see that it is FREE again at the moment!
Support WMV, AVI, MKV, XVID, MP4, 3GP, and more. Support audio formats. Subtitles smi, srt, ass, ssa, sub, txt. HTTP, FTP, MMS, RTSP, SMB streaming. Support for dual processors in iPad 2 for video decoding. And many other features :)
Personally, I use it most often for streaming video over a local Wi-Fi network using samba. So far, I've only watched standard DVDrips through it, be it whole movies or series, and even with streaming, everything is smooth.
Yes, I recognize the player, but since the title is worth the investment, I only tested paid players... But otherwise, thanks for the advice Cofi ;-)
I personally prefer ace player. It can do everything, it's free and, most importantly, the image doesn't tear. It can load quickly from local networks. Support for subtitles is a matter of course, and most importantly, it can switch the encoding of subtitles directly in the video. I also used buzz player, but over the smb protocol it loaded terribly slowly and crashed terribly, ftp with upnp in the latest version of buzzplayer rather did not work than worked. I use iomega as local storage.
As I wrote above, I mainly focused on the most used paid players :-) so that people don't have to throw away unnecessarily
money.
Cus I use Azul player and I'm satisfied too. Otherwise, nice review, thank you.
I bought three players only to find out that the best is the free one :) That's why I'm writing my post
Sure ;-) thanks for the advice...
With AV Player, you can't shade through the reduction on a large TV (iPhone 4s 64 GB iOS 5.0.1.) that's why I use CineXPlayer and it doesn't have a problem.
Johnny, thanks for the reminder, TV out still works only on iPhone 4 but surely the next update will fix it ;-)
I solved the same problem about 6 months ago, but with the difference that for me the priority was to connect from the iPad via a WiFi router to my local network with a NAS server (Synology). So far, only BUZZ Player can do this, but streaming HD movies is choppy, therefore unusable. In terms of quality, this solution is capable of max. DVD rip. It is possible that the iPad2 would work withoneI didn't have any problems, but I see the weakness rather in the tablet's hardware than in connecting to the NAS via WiFi.
AirI installed the Player based on your recommendation, but I still can't connect to the NAS (via the SMB protocol).
I access other documents (documents, photos...) on the NAS via FileBrowser.
I already only use BUZZ, and I also get a lot of Czech and Slovak TV channels through it. If someone wants to watch videos on the bus, I would recommend the iPad 2 :-)
