Apple released an update last night AirPort Utility 5.5.3 available for Mac OS X (10.8Mb) and also Windows (10.1MB). The update resolves an issue that could cause the installation to terminate AirUtility port without the user's consent. Requires Mac OS X 10.5.7 or later and Windows 7 SP1, Windows Vista SP2 or Windows XP SP3. The update applies to all owners Airport Express, Airport Extreme Base Station and Time Capsule.

Servers Macrumors.com and 9to5mac.com has independently discovered signs of a new generation of Time Capsule and AirExtreme port in this update AirUtility port. Specifically, these are the following strings of code indicating a new device.

  • "bsUP.productName" = "Store Apple software updates on this %@";
  • "bsUP.description" = "Apple software updates that are copied to this %@ are available to anyoneone using this network.”;

However, as the server delivers Macrumors.com, similar codes have been found in updates since 2010, so it is not clear when exactly the new product might appear. However, we have one recommendation: if you do not have to buy immediately, wait with the purchase. Airport Extreme and Time Capsule for a few more weeks before new versions of these routers will most likely appear.

What will be new

Newly, Time Capsule and AirExtreme port should have included a processor Apple A4 or Apple A5 Dual-Core and operating system iOS in a modified form. Routers automatically recognize devices that connect to it and start downloading the software update, which they store in their memory and then upload to the connected device. There is also the possibility of closer integration with the service iCloud.
